TO PAINT or NOT TO PAINT~THAT is the question!? HELP!!!

I am in the process of setting up my sons room-only problem is.....this voice in the back of my head says (screams) "PAINT THEM!"
The cupboard & the bed are wood-and I am just not that OK with it-and I have tried to talk myself into leaving them-but....the voice!
THIS is the type of milk paint finish I was thinking about for the cupboard-but in a gray/blue.
and THIS is the type of paint finish I was thinking for the bed.
TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK! PLEASE!!

  1. I think I would paint the bed for sure, but that cupboard is beautiful with the wood. Paint the bed! Keep us updated. Blessings!

    1. Thanks! I really appreciate the help here-painting wood is ALWAYS a big deal! lol

  2. I would say paint one and leave one wood. You can always go back and paint the other piece later if you really want to. But you may just love the warmth of leaving one of the pieces :) good luck!!

    1. Thanks for your opinion! It's a hard decision! I think I will definitely paint the bed-and see how I feel after that. :)

  3. The wood is beautiful as is, but if you won't be happy with it, and the pieces aren't real valuable...I say paint them. Your inspiration photos are lovely and seem to be more what you are looking for!

  5. I would probably paint one for now and see how I like it. I like the mix of wood and painted pieces. My bed is about the same color and I am debating painting it too!

    1. Thanks so much! I am pretty sure I will be painting the bed-then leaving the cabinet for a bit-and see how I feel. I also want to know how the editor at Country Sampler feels about it because she may be setting up a photo shoot-IF she really likes what she sees! :D

  7. Just wondering.....but, what would your son like? For a boy, I wouldn't paint them, unless you move them to another room....JMHO

    1. Well I asked him and he really doesnt care. He is only 6. My 10 & 18 year old boys want their rooms done in NORMAL stuff! LOL So this is my last chance to do a boys room like this before he gets too old and starts wanting it decorated a certain way. ;)

  8. Really think that you should paint the bed in the grey wash finish you showed and leave the cabinet as it - it will ground the room.

    1. I am pretty sure that's what I am going to do Heather. I will do just the bed and leave the cabinet for a bit and see how I feel about it. Painting the bed might just be enough to change the look. But if not-I got me some MMSMP! ;)

  9. Oh dear friend, I just went through this myself, loving paint as a number one finish to anything and a must to the distressing of it as well. I had this French chest in the nude, loved it, still love it and will always love it nude but, I painted it. As much as I loved the nude finish of old, I also love the finish of the distressed white I gave it. It allows me to live with it awhile to,see if I need to top coat it with more old of grey's to it.

As for your SON' and his room, it's a no brainer to painting everything in a girls room, but pulling off the boy thing I can see your dilemma here?

    LET ME HELP YOU!....
You have already answered yourself with painting it, by not being so moved with leaving it as is,I always paint if my heart does not tell me to leave it alone, or if I have lived with it way to long perhaps time and trend has moved me to the direction of paint.

I love the American folk art look of the room, so farmhouse and oh so primitive. Yet a bit of an up-date look may do your heart well.
Love the idea of greyish blue to the cupboard but is it a colour you would move to any room of your home if you decide to move it around?
Are you a posed to using a eggshell finish of BLACK paint finish to the be, and distressed to the point of loving it, and then doing the cupboard armoire in a perfect grey a grey with the undertone of black and then dressing his bed in quilts of natural and perhaps a charcoal grey quilt, making his room feel guy-ish and a great flow with the look and feel of your weathered woods of whites. Yes, I love the finish in painting the pieces, Grey totally a grey finish to the soft side of grey-ish white to the cupboard armoire and perhaps a soft charcoal-ish black to the bed.

I hope this inspires you or maybe takes you to another thought direction in what inspires your heart and home.

    1. Oh Dore! Do you know there is a bed like you described in the newest Country Sampler! Painted black and it looks fabulous!! I love the style! the whole room is nice! but for some reason within my own home-I can only stand so much dark. lol I try to balance it-the boys room is right beside the girls pale room and I didn't want the boys room to feel to heavy. But great suggestion! Very inspiring! ;) Now I did paint the bed-it appears lighter in the photos than it really is-and for as much as it turned my stomach to paint it-it looks fresh just like I wanted-now if I could keep myself from thinking about painting the cupboard now!! ;)

  10. Hi, new to your blog. I'm all for painting furniture, but I wouldn't touch either of those pieces! They are both a lovely looking wood as they are. I would paint the walls and change the linens, leave those gorgeous pieces as they are. Just my opinion, you have to do what you like in the end.

  13. Both are great pieces but sometimes painting them makes us love things a bit more. If they aren't really valuable, I say go ahead and paint. Start with one and see how it goes.

  14. I'm sure that they would both look great painted. But I would paint the bed, and I actually like the cabinet as is.
    Good luck :)

    1. Well Susan, I painted the bed! it did turn my stomach I must admit-the voice in my head keeps telling me to paint the cupboard! I dont think I will though! lol

  15. Oh my, I would not paint either one....they are beautiful
farmhouse pieces. All this painting everything white is very
trendy and won't last. Those two pieces of furniture
are beautiful just as they are, just beautiful wood.
I hope you don't paint them....change the wall paint or
maybe add antique farmhouse braided rugs or french rugs and
bed clothes...maybe antique quilts, but don't ruin the beautiful
'REAL' farmhouse antique furniture. Someday everyone will be going around trying
to get the paint off of all the beautiful furniture that's been covered up and hidden
under white or grey distressed paint, just my opinion though, Corinne

    1. I completely understand! I did end up painting the bed and it was VERY hard to do! It made me feel sad like I was doing something very wrong LOL but I am happy with the fresher look in the room now.

  16. PAINT...the only downside to painting them is the work involved..but the payoff would be oh so sweet!!! x0x0
